Generate your backup key

Generate your backup key to start backing up your Olvid profiles in a file encrypted by this key.

How to start?

iOS
  1. Tap  > Backup settings .

  2. Tap Generate a backup key.

    Your backup key is automatically generated and displayed in 8×4 numbers and capital letters. Some characters are equivalent to make your life easier: 0=O 1=I 2=Z 5=S. Note one or the other, the result will be the same. And this has been taken into account for the security of your backups.

  3. Write it down on paper and keep it safe. Because this key will never be displayed again. But you will be able to generate a new one, the same way you just generated the first one.

  4. Tap I have copied the key.
Android
  1. Tap  > Backup settings.

  2. Tap  Generate a backup key or  Verify or re-generate a backup key.

 Your backup key will remain valid on your future devices, until you decide to generate a new one.

What’s next?

Choose between manual backup or automatic backup. We recommend automatic.

Generate a new backup key

If you lose your backup key, all backups made with it will be indecipherable. You must therefore generate a new one and make a new backup. Here is how.

iOS
  1. Tap  > Backup settings .
  2. Tap Verify or generate new backup key > Forgot backup key?
  3. Read the explanations on the window that appears and confirm by pressing Regenerate backup key now. Your new backup key is displayed on the screen.
  4. Tap I have copied the key. The main backup screen appears.

If you had already activated the automatic backups, that’s fine, the next automatic backups will be done automatically with the new key. Otherwise, you can make a manual backup or activate the automatic backup. Choose one now.

Android
  1. Tap  > Backup settings.
  2. Tap  Check or regenerate a backup key > Generate a new key.
  3. Read the explanations on the window that appears and press OK. Your new backup key is displayed on the screen.
  4. Tap I have copied the key.

If you had already activated the automatic backups, that’s fine, the next automatic backups will be done automatically with the new key. Otherwise, a new screen will be displayed offering you to make a manual backup (Export file button) or to activate the automatic backup (Backup to the cloud button). Choose one now.
